Brasil is very well known for its love of all sports, and the variety on offer in north east Brasil is very wide and varied.

The beaches are natural made sports centres for all to enjoy. In the morning, usually about 05.30hrs, the main road along the beach front closes for the exclusive use of people wishing to undertake any form of fitness. This includes running, cycling, roller blading, power walking or just a casual stroll. Along the way there is fitness circuits set up on the beach for you to use, free of charge. Beach sports continue through the day with volley ball nets, football goals a permanent fixture. At night the city centre beaches are floodlit and become a meeting place for family and friends to enjoy sports together.

Surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing are big sports and International competitions are regularly held in region with Joao Pessoa holding the world kite boarding finals annually.

Away from the beaches the government has invested in sports arenas and facilities and along with other private clubs offer all sorts of sports including martial arts, tennis and squash academies, to name few.

There are many gyms available for use and the average price is around R$40 per month, for the use of all facilities.

Another very popular sport is that of Futsal, which is the Brasilian equivalent to indoor football and is the fastest growing sport worldwide.

A must see sport in Brasil is Capoeira, which is a form of martial art that originates from north east Brasil. It is performed to music and the two artists perform acrobatic attacks on each other, without making contact, and the other avoids the attack. The flair, and athleticism of the artists is incredible, and attacks and defensive moves appear more like elaborate break dance moves.
